Connecting Our Community Through Skating

Introduction to Figure Skating - NEW for the 2025-2026 Season!

The Intro to Figure Skating program is the ideal pathway for skaters who have completed CanSkate Stage 1 and are currently working on Stages 2–4. It is the perfect introduction for those interested in transitioning into the world of figure skating. Skaters enrolling in this program MUST be enrolled in one Canskate session concurrently.

Following the nationally recognized CanSkate framework, classes are built around three fundamental areas: Agility, Balance, and Control. Skaters participate in circuit training, allowing them to practice a variety of skills in a dynamic and engaging format. This structure keeps skaters active, maximizes ice time, and creates an environment where they can progress more quickly through the CanSkate stages.
Participants are introduced to fundamental figure skating elements such as:

  • Forward and backward crossovers in both directions
  • Basic spins and jump preparation
  • Edges and turns for increased power and flow
  • Creative movement and performance expression

All sessions are taught by NCCP-certified professional coaches who ensure each skater receives quality instruction adapted to their skill level. The program emphasizes proper technique from the start, setting skaters up for success whether they choose to continue recreationally or move into competitive training.

This program includes weekly off-ice training. Our off-ice fitness class is designed to improve the strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance needed for figure skating success. Skaters participate in targeted exercises that develop core stability, explosive power for jumps, and mobility for spins and extensions. Sessions also include agility drills, conditioning circuits, and injury-prevention training to support safe and effective performance on the ice. This class helps skaters build the athletic foundation required to progress their skills and perform with confidence.

Program Requirements and Equipment

  • Prerequisite: Passed CanSkate Stage 1 and currently working on Stages 2–4
  • Enrollment: Skaters must also be registered in at least one CanSkate session per week
  • Skates: Figure skates are recommended for better support and performance, but not required
  • Helmet: CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory for all participants
  • Clothing: Warm, layered, athletic wear that allows for movement

With the added benefit of extra ice time, skaters can accelerate their skill development, gain confidence, and experience the excitement of moving toward more advanced figure skating opportunities.
