Connecting Our Community Through Skating
PowerSkate – High-Performance Skating for Hockey and Ringette Players
Prerequisite: Skaters must have completed the CanSkate Stage 2 badge or equivalent (get up unaided, move forward and backward, stop and turn).
EGSC has revamped our PowerSkate program for the 2025/26 season to better meet the needs of hockey and ringette-focused skaters.
Endorsed by Hockey Canada as the national learn-to-skate program for hockey players, PowerSkate is a high-energy, technique-driven program developed by the skating experts at Skate Canada. Designed specifically for hockey and ringette athletes, PowerSkate builds strong skating fundamentals to enhance performance in game situations. Redesigned in 2018 to align with Long-Term Development (LTD) principles used by Skate Canada, Hockey Canada, and Ringette Canada, the program serves as a progression from CanSkate into hockey or ringette-focused training. It develops 15 essential skating skills within three core areas — Balance, Control, and Agility — and supports all player types, including goalies, sledge skaters, adults, and athletes with disabilities. PowerSkate is also Canada’s only nationally regulated NCCP Instructional Stream power skating program taught exclusively by certified coaches. This is not a learn-to-skate program, and all participants must have a solid skating foundation before enrolling.

Professional instruction is provided by NCCP-certified Skate Canada coaches with additional training in PowerSkate.
Why PowerSkate?
Figure skaters are increasingly recognized as technical coaches to elite hockey players because of their mastery of stride efficiency, edge control, and agility. The PowerSkate curriculum addresses a common gap. Many hockey players lose speed and control when changing direction or skating backward. This program builds the advanced skating foundation needed to excel under real game pressure.
Equipment Requirements
Required: Skates, gloves, CSA-approved hockey helmet (cage optional)
Optional: Full hockey/ringette equipment
